Let Freedom Ring™ is a nationwide celebration honoring those who helped achieve our country's independence during the American Revolution. The Pennsylvania Society of Sons of the Revolution began stewardship of the event in 1969. Richard W. Thorington, then President of the Society, said at the time, that "Let Freedom Ring" was established to "revive the spirit of patriotism" and to provide "a dignified ceremony which will have important meaning for millions of Americans who love their country and have faith in its future."

Although this celebration is initiated in Philadelphia, birthplace of our nation's freedom, it is truly a nationwide event. In accordance with the U.S. Congressional Resolution Number 25, bells across the country are rung thirteen times at exactly 2:00 p.m. (E.D.T.), in honor of the thirteen original states that the signers of the Declaration of Independence represented.

Every Independence Day, at the appointed hour, four young descendants of the signers of the Declaration of Independence will tap Philadelphia's famous Liberty Bell, setting off the chimes of freedom from bell towers throughout the country.

Along with the tapping of the Liberty Bell on Independence Day, there is also a series of related patriotic festivities, which take place in the Independence Hall area, including a colorful parade of Revolutionary War Flags, fifes and drums and a wreath laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier of the American Revolution in Washington Square.
