Pennsyvania Society Holds its 110th Annual Meeting

The Pennsylvania Society held its 110th Annual Meeting at the Union League of Philadelphia on April 9, 1998.

Officers of the Society presented reports to the members recounting accomplishments since the April 1997 Annual Meeting. Secretary Theodore Clattenburg, Jr. provided an overview of Society events held during the year, as well as, other activities furthering the Society's objectives. Treasurer Mark Crosby Ward reviewed the continued strong financial picture of the Society.

Mark Frazier Lloyd in his report to the gathering, recounted the events of his first year as the Society's President. He also entertained the crowd with interesting stories from the Society's not so recent past.

The tales were used to illustrate the past travails of our organization and to energize the members to meet the ongoing challenges faced by the Society in an ever changing world.

As he had in his speech at last year's annual meeting, President Lloyd continued to champion technological developments for the Society. An enhanced web page is being developed with more interactive and visual capabilities. With it, the Society can reach beyond its geographic boundaries and convey its goals and purpose.

President Lloyd also used the annual meeting to formally introduce "100 for 2000," a campaign to enlist 100 new life members by the year 2000 annual meeting.

The Society was honored to have as a guest speaker for the evening, Mr. Seth Cotlar, the Society of the Cincinnati Sons of the Revolution Dissertation Fellow. Mr. Cotlar spoke on "A History of the Word Democracy, 1789 to 1800." Mr. Cotlar's views on the changing perception and meaning ascribed to the word "democracy" from colonial times to today were both insightful and thought provoking.

Life Membership Endowment Campaign "100 for 2000"

At the Society's Annual Meeting on April 12, 1998, President Mark Frazier Lloyd introduced a membership drive designed to preserve the financial strength and enhance the long-term direction of the Society.

Christened "100 for 2000," the campaign hopes to enlist 100 new life members by the year 2000. President Lloyd offered himself as the first of those one hundred individuals and pledged to submit his son for life membership next year. He challenged the members of the Society to "think of family members that could and should be life members."

While the finances of the Society have reached new heights, one of the primary objectives of the campaign is to increase the endowment and carry forward the objectives of the Society on a powerful note into the next millennium.

Encouraging a lifelong relationship between members and the Society is another key focus of "100 for 2000."

Gentlemen interested in life membership for themselves or a family member should contact the Society's executive secretary Martha Taylor at (215) 545-1888.

Let us join with President Lloyd and share the vision and dedication to make "100 for 2000" a reality.
