PENNSYLVANIA SOCIETY OF SONS OF THE REVOLUTION

NEWSLETTER NO. 14 JUNE 1998

Let Freedom Ring
1998

President Lloyd has sent a letter to more than 4,500 previous Honor Roll participants asking them to, once again, join the National Bell Ringing Celebration on July 4, 1998.

Chairman Byrne has arranged a wonderful luncheon at the Sheraton Society Hill Hotel beginning at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 4th, and the invitations are in the mail. Your enthusiastic support for this event can be counted on and Society members and their families will surely make their presence felt during this wonderful day of celebration. Be sure to return your response card noting entree selection, along with your check, to the Society office.

This event honors the Signers of the Declaration of Independence by ringing bells 13 times at 2:00 p.m. EDT on July 4th. The 1998 Bell Tappers are Whitney Anne Dorer, Jr., age 13, and her brother James May Dorer, age 12, Julia Blake Hill, age 14, and her brother Andrew Middleton Hill, age 11. The Dorer's are direct descendants of Benjamin Franklin and the Hills are descendants of Arthur Middleton, both signers of the Declaration of Independence.

Lancaster Chapter Will Host General Society Board of Managers Meeting

The Lancaster Chapter cordially extends an invitation to all to attend and participate at the upcoming General Society Board of Managers Meeting to be held September 25th through the 27th. A full calendar of business and social events is planned.

The fun begins Friday evening at the Pennsylvania State Railroad Museum at Strasburg with cocktails and a buffet dinner.

On Saturday all the Sons are invited to participate at the business sessions. That evening the Pennsylvania Color Guard will add some color to the black-tie reception and banquet at the Lancaster Country Club.

Sunday's events will focus on Penn Square - the historic center of Lancaster - where the Continental Congress met September 27, 1777. The Society will commemorate the 221st Anniversary of Lancaster's Capitol Day with a brief ceremony. Lancaster Mayor Charlie Smithgall will speak briefly and fire his Revolutionary War cannon.

Following the ceremony, the assembly will parade two and a half blocks to the First Presbyterian Church, where, some may recall, the Ninety Fifth Annual Worship Service of the Pennsylvania Society was held in May 1985. Following the service, a light luncheon and farewell sherry can be shared at the Hamilton Club.

Headquarters for the occasion will be the Hilton Garden Inn in Lancaster where a special rate of $99 will prevail for reservations made prior to August 15th. The registration fee for the entire weekend will be $225 per person, and for just the Saturday evening and Sunday activities, it is only $125 per person. Busses are scheduled for transport to and from all events.

A special ladies tour has been arranged for Saturday and will include Rockford, the home of General Hand, Washington's Adjutant General, and The People's Place where an informative slide show, Who are the Amish? can be viewed. Following lunch at Donecker's Restaurant in Ephrata, the ladies can shop or browse throughout the town.

Regent John S. Shirk and the Lancaster Chapter look forward to hosting this event and sharing their unique heritage.
