Description: a) Slightly domed brass cover with straight sides, the cover with a series of three incised circular double lines spaced evenly across surface and surrounding a central incised dot. The cover lifts off to reveal b) the silvered engraved dial, outer ring with degrees marked in four sections of 0 - 90 (half-degree increments), eight cardinal points (N, NW, W, SW, S, SE, E, NE) surrounding an engraved eight-pointed star, the four major direction points with elaborate curving motifs, one of the points with curving motif featuring a fleur-de-lis at tip, four intermediate points featuring engraved linear pattern; working double-ended compass point of decoratively blackened metal with brass "string" wrapped around major end, the compass point mounted to the face with separate silver metal brace affixed with a screw to outer edge of face. Two brass arms mounted to outer edge at N and S, the north arm with maker's mark; their ends with screwed-on upward-turning corner braces whose upper tips have various positioning and/or sighting holes. The underside with sturdy turned brass cylinder on which to rest compass on support. c) Separate brass stand with receiving pole atop disk resting on three bun feet.
